Our Story

The idea for Hugo’s Ice Creamery hatched in late 2015 after my partner & I wanted to spoil our beloved puppy, Hugo, with some dog friendly ice cream one sunny Gold Coast afternoon. To our surprise, doggie ice cream wasn’t easily obtainable in Australia, and the ice cream that was, appeared highly processed and not very special. As far as we were concerned, this was a problem that required immediate attention. I mean, how can Australian doggies be expected to go without ice cream? It’s hot out there!

Not knowing much about making ice cream, we purchased a small ice cream machine and begun experimenting. After lots of research, failed attempts and guidance from some dairy-free ice cream extraordinaires, we finally arrived at a recipe that worked, and tasted great!

After settling on a base mix that we loved, we began experimenting with different fruits, vegetables, meats & berries trying to find the perfect flavours. Finding the right flavours was difficult as the fury members of our taste testing team seemed to have different preferences to what we considered tasty. After lots of sampling, we finally settled on strawberry, salmon & peanut butter & bacon.

All of our doggie frozen treats are made by hand, with love, and we use locally sourced ingredients as much as possible. We’ve experimented with several different serving sizes in an effort to please as many puppies as possible & decided on a 100g (approx.) scoop.
